ABOUT THE PROJECT
Suffolk County seeks to mitigate impacts to human life and property, surface waters, and coastal wetlands, associated with onsite wastewater treatment and disposal system failures caused by natural hazards.
The Suffolk Water Quality Improvements project will bring together Long Island’s engineering, construction, and consulting professionals to complete this needed coastal resiliency project,
post-Superstorm Sandy.
Reasons for Project Area Selection
Suffolk County evaluated priority areas
for new sewer systems based on:

-
substandard septic systems and cesspools
-
small lots
-
dense populations
-
a short depth to groundwater
-
short travel times for nitrogen-enriched groundwater to enter surface waters

The data recommended locations along the coastline and other areas near adjacent waterbodies that are severely affected by sea-level rise, especially during hurricanes.
